Case Example from 2022 - WearProblem with stern tube: German container ship reports: A lot of white steel found in drained oil. Steel flakes around 10 x 10 mm (picture below). Also increased temperature. The oil in use is a mineral oil Total system volume around 300 ltr ABCON solution: This suggest metal friction. We advised to add 25 liters ABCON MARINE STERN TUBE+ with special hard teflon to reduce metal wear. Status from customer: “After adding ABCON MARINE-STERN TUBE+, oil temperature was reduced 10 degree.” ABCON comment: The metal flakes indicates asperity contact leading to excessive wear. After adding ABCON STERN TUBE+, containing hard Teflon particles, the temperature reduction of 10 degrees proves that there is no longer asperity contact at stern tube liner and shaft. |
